THE NEW BRIDGE. CITY COUNCIL EMPHASISES URGENCY.

Referring lo the question of the erection of the proposed pipe and traffiq bridge over tho Hutt River, the Town Clerk of Wellington wrote to the council stating that several letters had been received fiom the various local bodies and parties interested, suggesting certain minor operations and amendments. Of course, the maintenance required by destruction or wear by tho water might fall on the City Council in the proportion of its contribution. The appointment of delegates, with full power to act, was therefore asked for. It was decided to appoint the Mayor and Councillors Nicholson and Southgate, "with full power to act.' LOWER HUTT. The ordinary meeting of the Lower Hult Borough Council was held last evening. Present— tho Major (Mt. T. A. Petcrkin), Councillors Baldwin, Judd, Hollard, Ross, Wildsmith, Hodgins, O'Sullivan, Waid, and Russell. The To Momi Land Company applied for the water supply for sections 80 and 117, upon which dwellings had been erected. Councilloi Baldwin moved, and it was carried, that the company be advised that the application would be dealt with when the present scheme had been carried out. It was stated that so far 31 applications for the. water service had been received. The Petone Technical School intimated that the council was entitled to appoint one representative to the Board of Management for the ensuing year. Councillor Baldwiu was re-elected to repicsent the council. ' In reference to an accident at Belmont Hill Gully, W H. Knight asked for the payment of £3 for expenses stated to have been incurred. The writer suggested that further fencing was necessary. The clerk was instructed to reply that j the council could accept no responsibility in the matter. Out of ten applications Miss Welch j 'was appointed librarian to tho borough j library. ' ENGINEER'S REPORT. The borough engineer, Mr. Rix-Trott, reported as follows concerning the various works in progress in the district. The waterworks pipe-laying would be completed in the course of the next few deys. The connections with tho mains, reservoir, and engine-house would be completed during the coming foitnight. He intended to test tho reservoir and mains in sections during the latter paTt of this week. Good progress had been made in the work of tarring footpaths. The construction of the pound was well in hand. Tho clearing of the Black Creek was being proceeded with. In accordance with instructions, 'lamps had heen erected in Waiwetu-road, and feveral new connections with the gas main had been made during the foitnight. In connection with the fencing of portions o£ the Wainui llill, au inspection hod been made. It was suggested that about 36 chains of fencing bo put up at various places, and that the existing fencing bo strengthened. UNIFORMITY IN VERANDAHS. Tho following motion was moved by Councillor Ru&sell — '"That in the case of future applications for permits to erect verandahs to business premises, such verandahs shall be erected in accordancewith a uniform design, and that, if neceHfeajy, tho building bylaws bo amended accordingly." A lengthy discussion ensued, but Councillor Kussell eventually withdrew Ins motion. It was suggested that tho engineer should do his best to attain the object f-ought
