One case dealt with was that of a young man from Guernsey, with ii young and delicate wife and j child, who landed here three weeks ago j with £o, and who vt as now reduced to his List eighteen shillings. He is a painter by u'ude, and to enable him to iurtber prosecute his search for employment the trustees granted him two rations tor a foitnighfc and live shillings a week towards his rent. A grant of £3 10s was made towards the expense of buying trade tools for a boy who is in indigent circumstances. Notice of motion was given by the Rev. A. K. Hunt at the Congregational Union this morning that the council desired to place on record its gratification at the progress of temperance reform throughout the world and especially at the great success which has attended tho carrying of no-license in some parts of the Dominion, and in Aew of the coming no-license poll, the council urged upon its ministers and churches the necessity of putting forth every effort to bring about as speedily as possible the abolition of a tiaffic, which is one of the greatest obstacles to social and religious life. The large attendance at the funeral of the late Mr. H. A. McGregor this afternoon was an evidence of the great respect in which the deceased gentleman had been held by all classes of tre community. The funeral service was conducted by the Rev Mr. Bartlett. This afternoon 'the Wellington Benevolent Trustees hold their weekly meeting, Mr. A. C. Pearce presiding. Mi. Cook was the other trustee j- resent. The secretary reported that there wero 101 inmates of the Ohiro Home, 33 of them being women. Lodge Britannia M.U.1.0.0.F., held its fortnightly meeting in the lodgeroom last evening. N.G.- Bro. Lceden presided, and there was a fair attendance of the brethren. The report of the sick visitors showed that there was less sickness during the month than had been experienced for some time past. Four candidates having satisfied the lodge of their fitness for Oddfellowship, were initiated, and a proposal for one new member was received.
