OBITUARY. H.A. M'GREGOR.

Mr. Henry Alexander M'Gregor, J.P., late Government Inspector of Machinery, died at his residence, M'Farlane-street, last evening. Some months ago it was appaient that he was suffering from an internal complaint, but he was not confined to his room until three weeks since. " Mr. M'Gregor was a son of the late Dr. Alexander M'Gregor, of Glasgow, who was for many years resident medical officer of the Deniliquin Hospital, New South Wales. Born at Largamore, in Argylshire, he at' tho age of" six, went to England with his father, who was appointed medical surgeon to the South Hetton colliery, Durham. At the latter place he was educated and served his time as an engineer. In 1860, when, his apprenticeship has expired, Mr. M'Gregor went to" sea, joining the ship Lightning at Liverpool. On arrival in Victoria he joined the engineroom staff of the Blackbird. Shortly afterwards he was appointed to a position in the Williamstown Railway Workshops, where he was a .shopmate of the late Mr. Seddon. The friendship there started was maintained throughout -their lives. Subsequently Mr. M'Gregor went to the diggings, and obtained A situation as engineer with the Royal Standard Mining Company at Dalesford. Afterwards he served as engineer on the steamer Lady Darling, and later on transferred to the cngineroom of the Tararua. In 1868 Mr. M'Gregor settled in New Zealand, and for several years was engineer on the steamer Moa, at Lyttelton. Afterwards he was foreman of the Otago Foundry at Dunedin. In 1875 he was appointed Government Inspector of Machinery, under the late Mr.' Nancarrow. After twenty-nine years' valuable service Mr. M'Gregor retired. On leaving the public service he was appointed a Justice of the Peace. He was married at Hartlepool in 1860 to Miss Stark, daughter of Mr. Anthony Stark, of Durham. The late Mr. M'Gregor was regarded as a very capable engineer, and was at all times ready to ' assist, the younger men in his 'profession. . ; ■ The surviving members of deceased's family are Mrs. M'Gregor (his widow), Mrs. J. P. Luke (wife of Mr. J. ■P. Luke joint-managing director of 'S. Luke and Co., Ltd.), Mrs. J. W. Robinson (wife of .Mr. J. W. Robinson, marine engineer), Mr. Geo. M'Gregor (manager for Niven and Co., engineers, Napier), Mrs. C. W. Aiken (wife of Mr.. C. W. Aiken, of J. Duthio and Co.), Mrs. Post (wife of Capt. Post, of the Tutanekai), and Mr. H. M'Gregor, marine engineer. There are twenty-six grand children. The funeral will leave the residence, M'Farlane-street, to-morrow afternoon at 2.30 o'clock for the Karori cemetery.
