SCULLBNG CHAMPIONSHIP. WEBB v. TRESIDDER.

CHRIS. NEILSEN. [Bt Telegisafu. — Sfkcial to The Post J WANGANUI, This Day. A very largo crowd assembled on' the bi'nks of t'ae river yesterday to wutch the scullers, b\it many who attended expecting to see the 1 champion at work for the last tina< on the lowei 1 course woro disappointed, as Webb took a spell, poing picnicking instead of rowing. He had two very solid rows on Saturday, finishing up on each occasion with a moot attractive sprint. To-day he left town for Kaiwhuiki; where he will put in the resfc of his training on tho course proper. He was accompanied by hia trainer Barnett, and J&e Green, pacemaker. Tho champion enjoys camping life, and it appears to suit him for training purposes. * His camp is situated noar the top of the course, opposite the Maori pa. La&t ihas he was camped there tho natives took special delight in keeping him well supplied with fresh floun^dera and tho best oi everything thoy had. Trcsidder goss up to tho Upokongaro Hotel to-morrow. He will bo about half & mile below tiio finish. Oi course he was out yesterday morning, putting ija a. very solid row over some seven miles, and finishing in good style, with a long IK/Werfui stioke. Tho water was lumpy, but this appears to make little difference to thft Australian, who can drivo his boat agampt v. head wind remarkably fast. It ie claimed for -him, in fact, that ho would beat any one in such conditions. Information received here shows that Chris. Neilson, whose reputation as a sculler and boat-builder is well known, intends coming over to see the race. It is said that Chris would start in a handicap Taoe, providing one is arranged. Such an event could be held near the town, and would be very interesting, as Webb, Tresidder, Arnst, Ford, and Neilsen, at least, would start. It is suggested that if the proposal takes definite form the ovent could be decided on the afternoon of the Saturday following the big race.
