His Worship the Mayor received the following telegram from Sir Joseph Ward to-day : —I heard with the deepest of the disastrous fire that has occurred in your crty, and by which a large number' of your fellow-citizens, have suffered a severe financial loss, 1 in addition to the throwing out of work of a large number of employees. It is p, most serious matter, md I tender my . earnest, sympathy, both to' {-he ployers and the employees. I feel' sure, however, that those concerned will, with the characteristic pluck and energy of our people, make the best of a bad job, and qmckly overcome , the difficulties brought about by the great disaster. CONDITION OF THE RUINS. The' ruins of the fire are still smoking vigorously, and occafiional . flames make their appearance amongst the. ruins in spite^ of the enormous, quantity of water that, has been pumped on the debris inside the scorched nnd shattered walls. The D.I.C. building seems £o contain still a good deal of inflommahle matter, as several , small fires could be &aen thi& morning. Probably it will be at least- a week before it will bq possible to start clearing away the asheq.' Some of the walls nt present standing are obviously in an unsafe condi- , tion, and they will nave to be pulled down as soon as possible. Tho White Hart frontage is fairly safe, but the front wall of Ashby Bergh and Co.'b building and the adjoining premi&es is cracked extensively, and several 1 piecea have fallen. The D.I.C walls. in both Cashel-street and Liehfield-street lia.vo been partially demolished, and the wall of Wardell's factory facing ' the .right-of-way has been pulled down, filling'tho right-of-way with bricks. Negotiations for rebuilding operations have been opened in several instances, but it will be some time before, any .definite pans are prepared. There iaj no doubt, however, that taltimatolyftho appearance of the city will bo 'improvod as a result of £he fire. The land covered / by the bunted buildings has increased enormously in valup "during recent years, and owners will takq tho opportunity to secure the maximum return from the land available. Thia'Vill moan larger buildings in several cases. Workmen commenced ' to demolish the front wall of Ashby, Bergh and Co. 'a place yesterday afternoon, and the proceedings afforded much interest to a crowd of spectators. The falling brickwork badly bent 'two new metallic ' circuit cables which had just been repaired by the Telephone Department, 'and severed from fifteen to twenty single telephone wires, causing them to £ixg almost to the ground for some distance along tho street. It i« proposed to pull the rest of tho wall down.
