AUCTION AND PROPERTY SALES

THE RHODES ESTATE. For many years past a largo number of building hites in Wellington havo boen locked up owing to tho failure- of the lato Hon. W B. Rhodes to niako provision in his will for the salo of tho land owned by him. To remedy this j stato of affairs the trustees approached Parliament for relief, and after negotiations this was finally granted in form of a private- Bill, which gave to the trustees power to sell the lands of tho estate, subject lo certain provisions. All arrangements have now been completed, and a salo by public auction of tho bulk of the Rhodes Estato city lands will be hold on Wednesday, tho 18th March. Messrs W. H. Tuynbull and Co. have been entrusted with tho conduct of tho sale. It is. claimed that, for, in aggregate extent and value* so much city land has not hitherto been submitted to salo at the ono time by public auction in New Zealand. All tho properties are located 'within tha ■city 'area between Thorndon and Te Aro. That the purchasers of the properties, will speedily set about improvements, especially in regard to the natura and extent of- the- buildings upon tho several sections, is, say the auctioneers, J obviously a sure matter. From Ihe utilitarian standpoint, it is pointed out, ' this is an excellent thing, but to that inconsiderable section of 'the citizens that places store by the old conditions, and in memory of tho old places, keeps fresh the scenes and companions of years long gone, there is cause for regret in the prospective passing away of the very oldest amongst present day survivals from the days of the forties. Chief amongst those- is the quaint old gableroofecl building on Lambton-quay, known nowadays as Lethaby's umbrella shop. Old identities refer to this as undoubtedly th? oldest building in Wellington. Lethaby's, it is interesting to recall, Avas originally tenanted by a cooper, who had the reputation of being Wellington's wit "and chief practical jojier. Another building of olden aspect to be offered for sale, with, its lands, is "The Blue House," which adjoins Lethaby's. In tho days -when Wellington had not reached the status of a city, "The Blue House", was kept by 'Mrs. Mason as a. draper's ' shop, and it is her namo that is psrpctuatcd in tho nams given to the steps running from Lambton-quay to Wellington-terrace, in tho vicinity of Mec's chemist's shop. There are other properties dotted in .the city between this point and Man-ners-street. In a by-street from Man-ners-street (Cornhill-street) thoro is to be sold a survival from the big earthquakes of 1848 and 1855. There- is, it is stated, a current belief amongst, Wellington people, old and young, that overy brick building in the city was destroyed when "the big carthemake" took place, but .refutation of this is supplied by the brick building in reference. It is, however, stayed and braced by iron bands to an extent which shows that it must have- had what is colloquially termed "a pretty considerable twist." Oil the Lambton-quay block,- which was traversed by tho fire of October 1906, there are some of the estato lands • situated, tho flam-?s having remove J from them the small offices thai for years stood amongst tho more- up-to-date-buildings, like so many timbered anachronisms. Ono of theso. sections was for many years the headquarters of Cobb, and Co. 's coaching business. The extent of tho lands to bo sold runs into acres. iScnarato detailed plans of each nlloimbnt are now being pro-pared for ths convenience of intending investors. lTull particulars and planb will 1-0 placed before the- public jn a complete catalogue, £vhich. i& now in tlio press, and will bo issued in a few days.
