THE CORPORATION PICNIC.

The Corporation employees' picnic was held yesterday at Day's Bay, and it constituted a highly enjoyable outing. Every branch of the service was well represented, and the City Council, led by the Mayor, was present in force. There was a thoroughly democratic mingling of the grades, and while the Town Cleric was busy' pushing swingboats, the City Engineer was acting as anchor-man in a tug-ot-war, and the Mayor was leading three equally valiant city councillors down the precipitous ways ot the water chute in a heavily laden boat occupied by only themselves and the steersman. The city solicitor, with the town clerk's chief officer, the city inspector, and numerous assistants, looked well to tlic comfort 1 of their fellows and the visitors, while races for a host of children of various ages were ■ contested under their supervision with satisfactory results for large numbers. Tho championship running events were annexed by a fleet-footed young man named J. H. Stubbs, who outclassed all competitors in all events (100 yards, 220 yards, arid 440 yards), and so gained the challenge silver cup. There was a desperate set-to in the tug-of-war for a challenge cup presented by the city councillors, but the electrical engineer's branch (coached by Mr. Simeon and captained by Mr. P. M'Coll) once again showed their superiority,- and won the trophy for the second successive year. Everything connected with 'the outing' , passed off pleasantly, and on the return trip there was a general tone of gratulation apparent amongst the picnickers. Occasion was taken by Councillor Cohen to present the trophies to the successful competitors, aud cheers were given for the officials, whose united endeavours contributpd so greatly to tho success of tho gathering. Mr. J. M'Bean was tho hon. secretary of the picnic committee. 1 The Premier will open the new pott office at Cambridge on 15th February.
