Two prizes, of £4 4s and £2 2s respectively, were lately offered through the Surveyor (the journal of the Institute of Surveyors, New South Wales), for the best essays on the subdivision of town, suburban, and country lands. It is interesting to iioto that as the result of the competition, both prize:! came to New Zealand. The first prize essay by "Sporo," Mr. Thomas Ward, Wellington, appears in the December i&sue of the Surveyor, and is a very interesting and valuable paper. To Mr. Walter I. Robinson, Hokitika, tho second prize was awarded. The first year pupil teachers' examination, under the Wellington Education Board, which aro not essential for pupil teachers who 0 have passed the junior Civil Service or the • matriculation examinations, have been completed.
