In recording in this week's Gazette thafc the estimated population of the Dominion, at the end of last year was 989,560, the Registrar-General gi\es Eomo details of the ■vital statistics of the year which > are of gcncial interest. ' ' ' Tho number of Chinese in New Zealand on 31st December, he says, was estimated to bo 2724, of whom 59 were females. Excluding Maoris, the population increased by 20,763, or at the rate of 2.28 per cent., during the year. To this increase, excess or births over -deaths contributed 15,003 and excess of arrivals over departures 5730. The birth-rato for tho Dominion in 1907 •was 27.31 per 1000 of mean population, and the death rate 10.95, as against 27.08 and 9.31 respectively in 1906. The deaths in 1907 tt.0,067) were greater than tlio number registered in 1906 (8339) by 1728, and the rate per 1000 rose from 9.31 to 10 9b. Tho number of marriages (excluding thoso ooutractod between Maoris) solemn, ised in 1907 is eftimated at 8170, giving a rate of 8.89 per 1000 of the mean population, against 7692 and 'B.4B, the actual number and rate in 1906.
