PETONE AND HUTT. SUBURBAN NEWS ITEMS.

HUTT RIVER BOARD, Tho monthly meeting of the Hutt River Board was hold last evening, thechairman (.Mr. Foster) presiding. There v\ ere also present Messrs. R. Stevens and T. A. Peterkin, the last-mentioned member taking hi 3 seat for the first lime Recently 'Messrs. Pitcaithly and Co. erected certain additional plant at their works at Belmont, without first obtaining tho board's permission to do so. Upon their attention being drawn to tho omission they pointed out in a letter to the- board that they could obtain no shingle unless the additional plant were erected. After a short discussion it was decided to grant permission, on tho understanding that the structuro should be pulled down, if thought necessary by the board. Reporting on his recent visit of inspection to Everest's Creek the board's engineer (Mr. Laing-Meason) stated that he could see no reason why permission should not be granted to the Petono Borough Council to divert the stream into th© closed western arm of tho Hutt River. It was decided to act according to the engineer's opinion. The question of the disputed liability, with the Hutt Borough Council, concerning the- responsibility of widening River Bank-street, was discussed at some length. Tho outcome was that a committee consisting of the chairman, and Messrs. Robt. Stevens and Orton, Stevens, was appointed to confer with a committee of three from the council. It was decided to make a general inspection at an early date of the whole district under the board's jurisdiction. Tho foreman of '-he works (Mr. Clayton) reported that the shingle banks below tho bridge- were accumulating, and would heighter th© flood level in the event of a flood. The breaches were at present in the hands of the lessees (Messrs. Pitcaithly and Co.). The board resolved to request tho lessees to remove tho superfluous shingle. The foreman also reported that 45 chains of protection work was nearing complption, and tliat several minor matters had been attended to. The report was adopted. HOSPITAL SUNDAY. At a meeting of the Hospital Sunday Committoe at Petone, the Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) presided over a good attendance. Final arrangements were made in connection with the programme on Sunday afternoon. The conductor of the Petone, Brass Band was selected by ballot to act as conductor for the march to be played by the combined bands. x\. number of local friendly societies, the fire brigade, and Navals stated their intention <Jf taking part in the procession from the railway station. u> the Recreation Ground. ( One half the procession is to enter the Recreation Ground by the Britannia-street entrance, and the other by the Buickstreet entrance. The local bands will play in the town on Saturday night. Several Wellington bands will take part in the Sunday proceedings. A COURT CASE. Before Messrs. lnglis and Short, Justices, at Petono yesterday, Charles Sullivan, a seafaring man, was convicted and fined £5, and costs, 6s, in default 14 days' imprisonment, for using obscene language on tho railway station platform. SEDDON MEMORIAL. At the meeting of the Railway Workshops Employees to elect a representative on tho Petone Technical School Board, tho following resolution was carried on the motion of Mr. D. M'Konzie, seconded by Mr. G. M'Gheo .— "That QlO Hon. tho Minister, and the General Manager of the New Zealand Railways, be asked to allow each department of the Petone Railway Workshops to make some working models to enhanco tho Richard John Kcddon x collection of models >at the Potone Technical School. That the said models' to be constructed will bo the first steam engine by Watt, the first steam hammer by Naismith, and the first locomotive link motion, by Stephenson. That every facility bo given the men and the technical students to make those models perfect specimens of engineering art, and worthy 'of commemorating tho name of a- great man ; and that the foremen of tlio departments be allowed tho supervision of control and construction over their respective exhibits. It was decided to make an annual collection in the workshops, for making additions to the Richard John Seddon Collection of Models at the Pct'one Technical School. PETONE'S ' POSSIBILITIES. ( The committee of the Petone Borough Council entrusted with the special work of collecting information concerning inducements to be offered manufacturers in making Petono their headquarters, is not lo&ing sight of the subject. It is at present gathering details regarding the price of land, the cost of reclamation, and tha probability of arrangements that might be come to in connection with the Hutt Park Railway line. The leport, it is anticipated, will not reach the council until a fortnight or three vzeeka' hence. . AMATEUR ATHLETICS. Two finals in connection with the PJ.C. Athletic Club wero run off last evening on the Recreation Ground, Pqtone. The first race, although run in somewhat slow time, afforded ci very interesting finish to the largo number of spectators present, only 1£ yuuTs separating the first four men. A cheque for £7 10s and a letter of thanks were received from Mr. Jenness in recognition of the brigade's efforts _at tho fire which recently threat^ ened his house. A notice of nu-tion was given to make operative the rules dealing with non-attendance. > Charles Vincent, employed as a slaughterman at tho Gear Company's works, was rendered unconscious yesterday afternoon by a kick on the head from a sheep. He was attended by Dr. Perry, but it was not till after three hours had elapsed that he regained consciousness. He 13 now progressing satisfactorily.
