WHERE THE FIRE ORIGINATED. IN A PACKING ROOM.

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. There seems little doubt that the fire originated in the packing room of Strange and Co.'s premises in a nght-o-way leading from Lichfield to Cabhelstreet, as early arrivals found 'this portion of the premises a seething furnace of flames, the fire not showing elsewhere. This department was closed in tho usual course early in the afternoon, (the half holiday). There is no idea how the fire originated. A SUGGESTION. A Wellington correspondent, "Expert," writes : — "The recent calamitous outbreaks of fire at Timaru and Christchurch are reported to have commenced in the linoleum departments at both places. It may not, perhaps, /be generally known, that goods, of which linseed oil forms a component part, are especially liable to rapid oxidation and consequent firing if tightly packed or rolled ; this characteristic together with the hot -weather generally prevailing nnty provp to have been the originating cause of these dir-ascers, and holders of stocks of these goods in our large warehouses would do wisely in exercising every care to prevent overheating, and institute timely and vigilant inspection so as to prevent serious outbreak of fire in the city." SECURE "DOCUMENTS. , The efforts to subduo the Christchurch firo were almost unavailing and the loss is appalling. Those who were wise enough to have Chubbs fire resisting f=afes, and strong room doors on their premises, will congratulate themselves on their foresight. Chubb's safes have often been tested and never found wanting. Their first "baptism of fire' was a great victory for the makers, and the name Chubb has since become synonymous with safety. Those who wish to be immune from the disastrous effects of fire should use Chubb's fire resisting safes. Chubbs resist fire. Gualter Dykes aud Co. , Featherston-street, are New Zealand agents for Chubb and Sons' fire resisting strongroom doors and safes. — Advt.
