Complaints are frequently made of people being induced to givo, under lalse pretences, for purposes represented i as charitable. To-day at the Police i Court a man named Joseph Daly, alias ! Dale, was charged before Mr. Itiddeli, I fi.M., with having made seven attempts, ' all upon local clergymen, to obtain ■ money by false pretences. As a means of obtaining the money it was stated that he had concocted a story to the effect that his sister was in service in Oriental Bay, and had stolen a watch, I and he wanted some money to help her out of tho difficulty. After that story , had beon used for some time, he then | stated that his relative had gone to Blenheim and, having become connected with undesirable people,- he implored money to bring her back to Wellington, whare he desired to look, after lor himself. Seven local ministers were approached, and various sums, ranging from 10s to £2, were given. Mr. Casey, who appeared for defendant, pleaded that Ins client was nut quite right mentally. He was subject to epileptic fits, and for somo considerable time he had been confined to the llosoital suffering from brain troubles. WhUo there, two operations had been performed, but no good seemed to re- j suit therefrom. He suggested that in- i stead of defendant being sent u> gr.ol that ho be admitted to a mental hos- j pital. Accused was remanded for sentence until Friday. '
