INFANT LIFE PROTECTION.
GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE. Recognising the importance of protecting infant hfo, the Go\ eminent is doing all it possibly can to assist tho societies that have been formed in the main centres to carry on this woik. Alluding to the formation of the associations, the Hon. Mr. Fowlds, Minister for Public Health, raid to a Post representative to-day: — "Of course, tho Government has nothing to do with that beyond tho fact that wo givo a subsidy on the vc-luntaiy 'contributions that have beon provided by tho public for these societies. First of all we have appointed the local managers of industrial Schools and Receiving Homes to bo district agents of the department for dealing with children under the Infant Lifo Protection Act. Thcee officers aro all ladies. We have appointed assistants to them to enable the -work to be earned out efficiently. These asbistants are either trained nurses J or ladies who have had special experience in the nursing of young children in some of the voluntary home? in the country." In conclusion, the Minister said ho thought it was reasonable to exp3ct a great saving of infant lifo as a result oi the recent legislation and the work of the local societies.
At the weekly session of the Pioneer Lodge, No. 1\ 1.0. G.T., Bro. A. J. Staples, C.T., presided. There was ono initiation, and one member was admitted by card. What is claimed to bo a record in entries for handicap events at the Amateur Athlelic Club's meoting, has been secured by the Hutt Valley body for its sports, to be held on Saturday noxt, the total number being 287. In one event alone 37 competitors are to face the starter. The management committee of the club has shown a good deal of enterprise in the preparation of an attractive programme of events. These will include six provincial champion, ships, in which the team for Australia is to take parfc ; a wood-choppiug competition — always an attraction)— bicycle events, and a tug-of-war contest, which is evoking keen rivalry amongst a large number of teams. A committee of ladies will provide afternoon tea, and music is to be supplied by the Hutt Brass Band.
