THE HOBART CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. ' NEW ZEALAND TEAM. [BT TiLEGBAPH. — PKESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTOHURCH, 3rd Fijbruary. 'The .Selection Committee of the 'New Zealanu Amateur Athlet^q . Association has selected, iho following team -to .represent New Zealand at the forthcoming Australasian championship meeting: — • Tiembath (Southland 1 ). Murray, Orbell, and litubberfisld (Canterbury). , ,i ■. - M'Kay and Henderson (Wellington). Tho team will leavo' Lyttelton on 14th February. The expenses of the tour will ba delia\ed by the council of the association. • It v»as originally intended that th,a team shrmld consist of rive men, and .the choice of the fifth hy between Stubb-r-field and M'Ksy. The council, however, decided to send both, and the team 'has been int teased to s-ix. • KERR'S WALKING. Il is safe to Eiy that there is no morn popular athlete in tho distiict controlh.d by tho Wellington Amateur Athletic Jisrociation than H. E. Kcrr, v.-oii the onr mile championship oh S<;turdn} , but was disqualified, in the three miles evr:it by the judge, Mr. Batc-lidor. Kerr's supporters" are disappointed that he ha& not been chosen to represent New Zealand at tho Australasian championships at Hobart this month, and as they are convinced that the last -word has not yet been said on the correctness or otherwise of his "style" a proposal has been set on foot (and is being enthusiastically taken up) by his admirers ro raise a sufficient sum to' tend him to Tasmania. Ifc is suggested that M'Kay, of Wellington, should be the fifth member of the team whose expenses will bo paid by the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Council, that the Christchurch Centre should defray Stubberfiold's expenses, and that Ithe Wellington Centre and Kerr's admirers hero should do the same for their representative. Kerr is an unassuming young aian, and it is urged that he ip only too anxious to satisfy tho requirements of tho judges in every way. His iriends, therf.lore, want on.cc for all to have a much-debated question settled. Kerr has woil upwards of fifty walking event* siree ho turned his attention to this branch of sport, and many men who thems^hes have been good performers on the trackr-'-iike Leslie, of Wellington, who has over 150 walking races to his credit, and James Doy'e— say that ho is a true wallwr. Kerr's friends claim that there is good and fair reason for asking for a final pronouncement taking all tho tircumotancss into account, and they state that they ill cheerfully supply the funds to send K°rr to Hobart with the New Zealand team.
