SUPREME COURT. CRIMINAL SITTINGS.

THEFT: TWO YEARS' IMPRISONMENT. After The Pof-t went to press yesterday tho hearing of the chargo of theft of J33 from James Cosford' at Masterton on 2nd January last, preferred against James Mills nnd Arthur James Thomas, was proceeded with. James Cosford, W. King, Francis P. Boyle, Constable Cahill, and Sergeant Miller gave evidence, which showed that Corford and tho prisoners had been drinking together. The theft was committed whilst Cosford was intoxicated. The jury returned a verdict of guilty. His Honour said .both the accused had criminal records, and he sontenced them to two years' imprisonment with hard labour. ' 'ROBBERY WITH VIOLENCE. Patrick Brady pkaded not guilty to a charge of robbing George Falloon of £6, at 'Wellington, on 27th December last. It was also fiated that the robbery was accompanied with violence. Mr. G, A. Hurley wJs foreman of the jury. Mr. Myers, Crown Prosecutor, briefly stated th 3 nature of the ckse. He said that Falloon had been drinking on the day ths offence was alleged to have been committed, and on leaving a hotel was set upon by prisoner and another man, who knocked him down, and stolo tha money. The. prisoner admitted the theft, but denied having used violence. He was sentenced to four months' imprisonment with hard labour. THEFT' FROM A ( DWELLING. John Moffett and Charles Mack, alias Osborn, pleaded not guilty to a charge of having, on. 11th November, 1907, stolen a quantity of silverware artichs, the property of H. Martindale, from Barrett's Hotel. Accused, who pleaded not guilty, were defended by Mr. Wilford. The evidence f-howed that the articles were missed from Marlindale's Iwdroom and wero subsequently found in a pawnbroker's at- Newtown. The accused were identified as being thf persons who sold the articles to the pawnbroker. Mr. Wilford contended that the evidence was not sufficiently strong to convict the accused. The- jury returned a verdict of guilty, and accused were remanded till next day for sentence. BREAKING AND ENTERING. Frederick Cooper pleaded guilty to breaking and entering tho premises or Messrs. G. Hickson and W. Robertson and stealing a quantity of jewellery and silverware. His Honour haid prisoner had a bad record, and *«ntenced him to three years' imprisonment^ TRUE BIIrLS . Tho Grand Jury returned true bilk in tho following cases: — Edward James Leydon, theft of a postal packet; Archibald M'Nab, ,theft ; Adeline Lilia May Francis, forgery ; Edward Winter, indecent- assault; James 'Malachi Sheridan, manslaughter. No bill .was returned against Sheridan on the chargo of murder.
