The Norfolk Island correspondent of the Chnstchurch Press, writing under date of 12t>h January, 1908, says : — On the 12th of last month we had a. visit from the great sea serpent, or one of the family. During the whaling season several whale lines had bsen lost, and a boy called h|s father's attention to what he thought was one of them floating quite close to the beach. Upon examination, however, it proved to be some sea monster, undulating along, about ten yards from and 1 -parallel to the beach, the description given by the observer being ithat it was from four to five hundred feet in length, about two feefc in diameter, colour dark brown, shading to grey. The middle part was sometime under water, and the head and tail on the surface, the head at other times being well up out of tho water. Two sharp horns stuck up above the eyes, and there was what appeared to be a long hairy beard under the head. Ifc was said' to be accompanied by .three pilot fish, one in front, and one on each side. The monster was in view for a considerable time, as the man had time to call his wife and 'family, and they all had a good look at it. * ' The s.s. Dnchess will make another excursion to Day's Bay to-morrow evening, when an entertainment will be given in the pavilion by vocalists and musicians. The full programme is advertised in to-night's Post.
