A CONSERVATORIUM OF MUSIC.

TO THE EDITOB. | Sir,— Referring to Mr. Parker's letter on the income received by the Associated Board of the Trinity College of Music. I have to state , that the statement I made had reference to' the total amount received in fees, not"£o net income. This can easily bo seen when it is noted that I was stating what the possible income of a Couservatorium would be if it did the examining. I assumed that tho fees charged were, as stated in the Associated Board's syllabus, namely :—: — Theory : Rudiments of Music, 10s 6d ; harmony, £1 1b ; counterpoint, £1 Is. Practical : Subiect, £1 lls 6d ; additional subjects, £1 lls 6d each. There were 1650 candidates last year for tho Associated Board, and I assumed that there would be £1 lls 6d paid by each candidate. This would give £2598 15a as income, andl I assumed that Trinity College fees Would be at least £1500 if not more. I have since Mr. Parser's letter learned that the foes charged are not those stated in the application forms now before me for persons desiring to be examined, but that fees as low as lv 6d each aro taken for practical work. J understand a great number of candidates come under school examinations, and that the fees are — Theory (primary), si; rudiments of music, 10s 6d ; harmony and grammar, 15s ; and foi practical subjects, from 7s 6d to £1 Is. I have been informed the fees received by tho Associated Board last year were £1445. I have not ascertained the amount received by Trinity College. I assume the fees would be about £1000 at least. Well here is a possible income of £2445 'for a conservatorium, and with such an income surely there can be no difficulty in founding such a desirable institution.. — I am, etc., ROBERT STOUT. Wellington, 4th February, 1908. Seven applications were received by tho Benevolent Trustees to-day for the appointment of submatron to the Ohiro Home. They wore Teforred to a. committee to recommend two of their number for selection by ths full hoard. There ar« 89 iuuules m the Ohiro t Home at jyTeseak
