ALISATION, Intimation was made to the City Council by the Mayor last night that the Gasworks Cpromitteo of the council had been negotiating regarding the 'acquirement by tne corporation of the gas-lighting business of the Wellington Gas Compnny. The committee -«as not yet" prepared to brintc down a report, but it was of opinion that it would be advisable to continue its labours. Under ths terms of aTrmlgamation with the defunct Melrose Borough Council the City Council had acquired, certain ritrhts in connection with the gas supply of tho?e parts of tho city formerly constituted as Melrose Borough, but if. would be perhaps inadvisable for rhe city to undertake tho supply of ga» to its outlying portions while a, private concern had 1 a monopoly of the central business. It would be much better if the council could undertake the whole business, and therefore it would -be well. Uy continue the committee. • » This course was unanimously a e reed to.
