There is a revival of interest in connection with the recent placing of five officers of tho Fifth Lancers on halfpay. The Daily Mail urges that there should be a public enquiry, especially into tho case of Captain Bryce Wilson, who considers himself tho victim of Colonel Graham's secret confidential reports. N It was announced early in November that three majors and two captains of the Fifth Lancers had been placed on half-pay, in consequence of the regiment being found unfit for service. There was a long official enquiry, and ! a month later tho following notice was issued by tho War Office": — "Tho recent action of the Army . Council in placing five officers of the' Fifth (Royal Irish) Lancers on half-pay was not due to any cause detrimental to, the character of those officers, j Though they were not considered suit- ] ablo to retain their positions as officers in this cavalry regiment, their services can be, and in three cases are being utilised in other appointments. The regiment is not inefficient to take the fie)d." Allegations were freely mad© • that , confidenco and discipline in the regiment had been undermined by a system of espionage and secret reports to the commanding officer, Colonel Graham.
