THE AUCKLAND SHOOTING SENSATION.
M'TAVISH BEFORE THE COURT. [B? TELEGRAPH. — rKESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, 28th January. Alister M'Tavish, who was the prime actor in the sensational affair on the Queen-street wharf the day following Boxing Day — by which Herbert Sirtor, an officer of the American steamer Quito, narrowly escaped being shot, M'Tavish afterwards turning the revolver upon himself and inflicting injuries to his head — this afternoon mado his appearance before Mr. Kettle at the po-' lice court. M'Tavish, a tall, well-pro-portioned man of about 30 yeara in appearance, limped into court with the aid of a stick, while his injured left -eye was hidden under a considerable thickness of wadding. He was charged with tho attempted murder of Sutor and subsequent attempt at suicide. After briefly outlining tho circumstances Mr. Gordon expressed the opinion-. that M'Tavish, who had shown eccentric behaviour prior to the shooting, was labouring under a slight attack of delirum tremens at the time of the occurrence, Prisoner, who reserved his defence, was committed for trial.
