Owing to the density 0^ the smoke and great heat in some districts, says, the Levin Farmer, it is almost impossible to muster stock, and hence great loss is feared if the fires continue to spread and the rain keeps off. Farmers are very gloomy, and fear depression in the autumn and winter. y The potato blight has been most prevalent around Ohau, in fact signs of rotting are already in evidence. The general effects of potato blight will be mos* severely felt by some of the natives. One enthusiastic native, tho own- | er of a very large, crop, is forwarding consignments of new potatoes to the Wellington market rather than let them rot (says the Levin paper). For the- last 27 years he was town clerk and librarian, and on several occasions was chairman of the School Committee.
