HURRICANE AND VOLCANO.

SERIOUS DAMAGE AT THE ISLANDS. [BT TELEGBAPH. — FRES3 ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, This Day. The volcano on Savaii, Samoa, continues active, with but slight intermission. Passengers by the Navua, which arrived to-day, had a magnificent view of th-e volcano by night. A severe hurricane was experienced over a portion of the Fiji group for two days about a fortnight ago. It was especially destructive at Lomaloma. From scanty reports to hand, it seems that besides great damage to copra plantations, it, destroyed several buildings on shore, including Mark's store. The small steamer Parua was driven on a reef and completely wrecked. The Ripple was also piled up on a reef, but it had the better fate of being refloated. Two ketches were completely broken up. An overdue cutter, it is feared, sank at sea in the hurricane.

The excursion and concert at Day's Bay to-night should induce a large num1 ber to cross the harbour. A firstclass programme has been prepared, and the grounds will be specially illuminated. The s.s. Duchess leaves the wharf at 8 p.m. sharp, returning from the bay at 10 p.m. After the billiard match to-night at the Exchange billiard hall, both players will give an exhibition of masse, fancy, and trick shots. A sale of millinery, cashmeres, and fancy drapery will be held at tho premises of Messrs. C. Adams and Co., Cuba-street, commencing to-morrow. Some particuJui us jutafidiissd, ia Hm twos.
