AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
NEXT SATURDAY'S MEETING. The officials of the Amateur Athletic Association have arrangements well in hand for the championship meeting, to be held on the Basin Reserve next Saturday, and some interesting and exciting contests can be looked for. Messrs. Thomassen, Cook, and Trembath have arrived. It is interesting to note that Trembath, competing last Saturday in the Caledonian Ground, Dunedin, won tho 100 yards championship of Otago in 10 2-ssec, the half-mile handicap from scratch in 2min (a record for the ground), and finally the quarter mile in 52sec. Tho running of the Gore representative should be a star attraction of the gathering. W. H. Madill, of Auckland, has also put in appearance. Madill recently returned from Canada, where he won the hammer-throwing and shot-putting championships. He is a competitor for the all-round championship of the Dominion. The Christchurch team arrived this morning. Some of the men will 'be seen out at the Civil Service Club's meeting to-night.
The recent fire at the Christchurch Hospital has caused Mr. S. Solomon, K.C. (chairman of the Dunedin Hospital Trustees) to ascertain tho position of the Dunediu institution in 1 the event of a similar calamity. He considers the existing provision for fire prevention inadequate. It is therefore likely that tho subject will engage the earnest attention of the trustees at an early date. Sergeant Rogers, of Auckland, has been placed in charge 'of the Onehungn Police District, vice George Twomey, deceased.
