WOUNDING A CONSTABLE. A PALMERSTON CASE.

[Bt Telegraph. —SrEciAt to Tub Post.J PALMERSTON N., This Day. At the S.M. Court yesterday afternoon William Waugh was committed for trial for wounding Constable Connor, with intent to do grievous bodily harm, on the 14th December. The constable's evidence was to the effect that, after having vainly warned accused, who was under the influence of drink, to go home, he arrested him, whereupon Waugh stabbed him in the abdomen with a clasp knif« he had in his hand. The medical witnesses stated that tlx© wound was a very serious one, the abdominal wall being penetrated. For twenty-four hours it could not be. said whether Connor would live or die. Sergeant Stagpoole deposed that at the station accused said, "He wished ha had finished the constable for interfering with him when ho had no right to." An application by the polico for a change of venue- from Pftlmerston to Wellington for accused's trial, on th» ground of greater convenience, was refused by the 'Magistrate.
