LARGE FIRE AT ASHBURTON.

The biggest iirc experienced in Asliburton for some years past Recurred last night in a large wooden building until recently occupied by tho Salvation Army as barracks, bub now converted into shops, and occupied by Robert Dorm and Sons (painters) and J. H. Scott and Co. (cabinetmakers). Tho fire started in the latter's portion of the building, and had » v good hold when discovered at 11,30 o'clock by the police. The building, being old, the spread of the fire was \cry rapid, and soon gob into Dorm's store, where, fed by a large quantity of turpentine, white lead, and paint, it raged very fiercely, and, although the fire brigade made every effort, there was no possibility of saving rthe building, which was burnt to tho ground with all the stock in trade. The flames at the same time invaded •Henry Stephenson's corrugatod iron auction rooms immediately adjoining, and this was gutted to such an extent that they will have to bo rebuilt, though most of the furniture and sale goods generally in it were saved. They were very considerably damaged. ■ The volume of fire was so great that a building, a block away, with a shingle roof, was in danger from sparks, etr\, for a time. .The insurances and losses are as follow: — Dorm and (Sons, £700 on the building (estimated valuo £1500) and £400 on stock, in the Sbi-th "British (estimated carrying £900) ; Scott and j Co., £200 on stock in an office unknown (carrying £300) ; Henry Stephenson,£2so on the building and £40 on the furniture, in the Norwich Union ; Henry - M'Elrea, £50 on a cottage and offices, in 'the London, Liverpool, and Globe, the '• estimated valut* of tho house being "£ioo: ■ Messrs. Tho firm also announce tho dalus on which fheir sale rooms will ha closed for tho Christmas and New Yea.r holidays— viz., from the 25th to the 28th December, both days inclusive, and on Jibe Ist and 2nd January, 1908 . The Wellington Harbour Ferries advertise special attraction'! «t Day's Bay for tho holiday.'. The Duchess will run to Day's Bay on Sunday morning and afternoon, and a steamer will lcavo town on Sunday night at 7 o'clock, returning from tho Bay at 8.40 p.m. Particulars are advertised.
