A SIX YEARS' CHASE. MATENGA CAPTURED. SUCCESS OF DETECTIVE BROBERG'S PARTY.

Ma-tenga has been "wanted" for over' six year?, on a charge of sleal•hifj a horse. Seme lime jxjo two expodi'tiona wore sent out to capture him, v but were unsuccessful, and the paities had a havd time, the wcathsr being very rough. Since Mnreuga took to thp bush, after the alleged horfc-stcaling, he had been blamed lor a number cf petty thefts from bush camps. A week or two ago Detective Broberg, Cousta>bl9 Skinner, and Mr. Green, a man with a knowlodgo of the di-.trict, left town to seek him again. On Monday they left Talicra to enquire into a report that a strange Maori had been* seen at Rangiora pah. From ihero they followed the trail, and came upon Matanga at Harapepa pah, about fifty miles from town. Matenga was tm'ten, nnd admitted sundry thefts from biuh camps. Matenga has been evading his pursuers for the past six years. A warrant for his arrest for "horse-stealing has been out since 1900. Two different parties, organised by the police, had previously failed to catch the fugitive. The last, which spent five months in tho bush in the Waiapu district, consisted of Detective Broborg, Mr. J. Earle, and Constable M'Alister. Tho privations suffered by this tiio havo alroady been told in tho press A couple of months ago, tho Commissioner of Police decided to again scud a party on tho track of the fugitive. Fet.ectivo Broberg was selected to supervise the hunt, and this time ho has been hucce^sful. Furthor details of the capture will be av/aited with interest.
