FOR THE " BOX."

IN A GOOD CAUSE. If Ihere is ono thing dearer than another to the heart of femininity, according to men's traditidns, it is the joy of gathering tr-easiiro for her "box," as the precious trousseau is properly called. To-day the girls aro getting equal thrills from filling boxes for other people, the sick and the iujured of Wellington. All over the city tho fair ones are- posted, and in three hour shifts they arc prettily working the smile- which only one man of Wellington can resist. It is reported that on Ambulance Saturday he scowled and "«iia a naughty word which rhymes with Paly-Clam" when a box was shaken, before- him, but even this hard -hearted pcrsSu would probably succumb in tho streets' to-day, and disgorge the shilling or the penny which he guarded so closely a few weeks ago. Even a smilo, can improve with practice. The ladies who aro in town to-day were out when tho St. John Society was pleading for funds. They learned than that there was no better pocket-picker than a merry eyo and a jovial lip. To-day they are putting this knowledge, to good purpose. 'The citizen gets a warm bombardment. He is raked by forked lightning — lovely thunderbolts — all along the boulevards. He sheds silver all along the route. In self -protect ion. he rushes into shops, and asks for three-penny bits, to reduce the cost of the beams that melt his heart at every corner. ( Podcatrians who have surrendered cas,h to tho channcrs who have held them up so nicely say that a few of the ladies should havo been deputed to cyclethrough the streets, and shake tho box at the persons on wheels. Others declare that the tram cars should not bo neglected. ' At noon the organisers, who were- at their head-quarters at the Town Hall counting over the spoils, wcro smiling almost as delightfully as the collectors. Early this morning, when a squall came on, they had feared that the contributions to-day would h& mostly cold water, but they have been getting showers of .silver and copper instead Up to 11 o'clock, after three hours' fishing, fourteen nets had yielded £50, a very good average. As the campaign is to continue till 9 or 10 o'clock ionight, the result promises to surpass the ambulance record. There are twenty-seven stations, with four, fine ladies at each fort. Though tho sweet-tempered soldiers are expected to take a rest after thr-eo hours, many of them are too enthusiastic to cease fire. They merely refresh themselves with a cup of tea, and are off to make fresh conquests. To-morrow afternoon the friendly battle with tho public will bo resumed :on the field of the Basin IJes-crve. At [ 2 o'clock all the bands of the city will march to this rendezvous, and during the afternoon they will give the- contributors ample value- for their money. The people aro guaranteed a musical feast in which quality will be allied with quantity in a stylo well loved by Britons. Speeches; too, will be given by the Mayor (the Hon. T. W. Hislop) and the lion. C. M. Luke (chairman of the Hospital Trustees). . eg*,,".. ,. r;.nzx!f The Wadestown Anglican Church bazaar concluded last, evening. A programme arranged by Mr. A.
