SQUANDERING MONEY ON DOCTORS.

Upon an application respecting th« maintenance oi some infants, the Chief Justico of Victoria delivered some opinions upon the ailments of the average family. The application related to the estate of tho late Lachlan M'Gullum, and Avas made with regard 'to tho shares of tAVO infants. Their mother desired that the sum of £150 shouldl be paid out of their capital shares ii& the sum of about £10,000 to recoup her for the outlay in their maintenance. The expenditure included £37 6s for medical attendance. Among the items in the doctor's bill were operation on, foot £10, and attendance for rheumatism £5 ss. The Chief Justice said that."sopie people have a passion for squandering money on doctors. A wisa woman claps on a . mustard ' plaster, where an unwise one takes the cnild to a doctor and' run& up a bill, so that when wo hear of an operation on a boy's foot we want to Ihioav whether it Ava» really 'anything more than cutting & corn. As to five guineas for attendance for rheumatism, quite likely a small bottle of liniment Avould have been quilo as effectual. Knowing Avhat goes on in this world, * the court is not dis« posed to ratify expenditure of this kind without being satisfied ,of the necessity for it. Here, hoAvever, the estato is considerable/ and it may save expense to authorise to recoup this outlay at once, and an order will bo mada accordingly."
