PUNISHMENT OF BOYS AND GIRLS.
« WOMEN'S PROTEST. {»T TELEGRAPH. — FBKSS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, 6th December. At a meeting of the Women's Politic.nl League last evening, Mrs. Kivkby presiding, a lengthy discussion took place on the recent occurrence at tho To Oranga. Home. The following resolution was carried : "This meeting of women strongly protests against the punishments recently inflicted at the To Oranga Home, and regrets (hat the Minister for Education gave his sanction to such extreme measures ; also, that in consequence of the widespread indignation aroused by the occurrence, the Minister be urged to alter the regulations affecting industrial homes as follows: — (1) That no boy or girl over sixteen years of age shall ho subjected to corporal punishment, thot being a barbarous nnfl degrading system. (2) Th;it the cutting of girls' hair as a. punishment be abolished entirely. (3) That miv method substituted for the above, such as solitary confinement, etc., shall nut ne more severe than that inflicted in ihe prisons for breaches of dierlplinf. (4) That a better system of classification b« inaugurated and strictly observed."
