CITY COUNCIL CRITICISED.

TO THE HDrTOR. Sir, — The City Fathers are very , rightly increasing the accommodation • at the Newlown Library, but it is decidedly questionable whether they aTo right in spending so- much money upon an unnecessary lecture hall. Very many , ratepayers would certainly , pretcr two , equivalent expenditure upon books and equipment ; especially seeing that tho hall would only bo required just for some half-a-dozen lectures in th'o win- . ter, which have been held elsewhere at, I understand, so very little oxponse, ' in other halls available in Newtown ; ' it seems decidedly extravagant to build another hall just for the few evenings 1 it would be required. Even, the pro- \ possd expenditure for tho museum is questionable, seeing that the Government is about to erect a palatial build- ! ing at Mount Cook as a colonial museum. It is trusted, Mr. Editor, that 1 you will übc your influence in the direc1 tion of persuading the City Corporation to limit its proposed building opera- ' tions to library and museum requirements only, and leave out tho lecturelull scheme, as it was a great reliof to real students and readers when the lectures wero discontinued at' tho library some two years ago. — I am, etc., i • CONSTANT READER. Wellington, 26th Sppfc., 1907. i [Mr. Petherick gratuitously drew , plans for extensions to tho Newtown 5 Library, and these havo been referred - to a committee. It is understood that , tho proposals, which include provision 1 for a lecture-hall, would involve au out,lay of £7000 or £8000.}
