WHY NOT ABOLISH MONTE CARLO?
r. — O- ..... A suggestion that it is time to abolish Monte Carlo as .a gambling centre is put forward in a letter to the London Times, signed "Indicus." "Before this hideous Monte Carlo tragedy ceases to be a nine-days' woncW." says the writer, "I would suggest j that it is time attention should be drawn to the tons et origo mali, tha I gambling-rooms of that too notorious place. I spaak as one who knows, having resided for fome years at Monte Carlo, near the villa in which the Goolds Mnte'l a small flat How loni; are the nations of Europe going to tel-crate tho | continuance of this plague-spot in their niidet? That is the question that should be agitated in the Press and Chancelleries of every European capital, who"<s gilded youth ar-a ruined annually in ccorcs, for they flock thither in ever increasing numbers solely because of ihe gambling facilities, made more secluetivo by the benuty of the place, its gardens, and tho unrivalled Casino band. "The profits, I may ttate, accruing from tho tables, which average 30,000,000f., are divided between tho shareholders, the municipality, nnd th© Princo of Monaco. On tlw same day thu Goolds are supposed to have committed tho crime with which they aro charged there occurred at , Castcllamaro the suicide of a young English and American couple on their honoymoon who had been ruined nt Monte Curio. "The Goolds, I may observe, for I knew them, though thoy were nob -friends of mine, were the laot people one would have thought capable of such a heinous crime— the man easygoing and amiable, his wife clever, proud, but obviously bourgeoiso ; but they,- wor-e , rendered desperate by their losses, for tho woman 1 used to see play daily, with her niece, and tho people who run, or profit by, tho tables aro morally responsible for those crimes, and the Governments of Europe should stamp out this blot on our civilisation."
