SOUTH AUSTRALIA.

Tho amendments made by the Council In the Franchise Extension Bill were considered last week in the Assembly. The Premier (Mr. T. Price), who evidently felt the heavy responsibility resting upon him, waited until the Speaker had left the chair, and the House had resolved itself into Committee before making his remarks. He declared that, the Council had so mutilated the Bill that it was hardly I'ocognisablo. They weie face to face with a crisis. The Ministry had expected that reason and moderation, backed up by the demand of the country, would have claimed some consideration from the Council, but they vvoro utterly disappointed. After 15 years of strenuous strugglo the Council were still stubborn, although the Opposition in the Assembly had recognised that there was a strong public opinion at the back of tho appeal for reform He felt very deeply the contemptuous treatment to which lie had been subjected by members of the Council. Finally, Mr. Price asked the House to send the Bill oack again to the Council in the same condition as it was before, and to give them another chance. Mr. Butler, Leadci of the Opposition, expressed regret, that the Government were not prepared to accept some of the amendments of the Legislative Council.
