JAPAN'S GRIP ON KOREA. A NEW CONVENTION. Ey Teleciapli.- -Pi»»s Association.— Copyright " "" """"" SEOUL, 26th July. ' After considerable opposition on the part of the Korean Court, a new Japa-nese-Korean Convention has been signed. The convention places the administration of Korea under the guidance 'of th© Japanese Resident-General, who is authorised to appoint his nominees to all responsible positions. It is said, with wnat degree of truth wo know not, that the original treaty between Japan and Korea, was forced down tho throats of Korean Ministers at the point of the bayonet, and that the Emperor of Korea, far from being a consenting party, was a mere tool manipulated by the Marquis Ito, Japanese Reiident-tGeneral in Korea. If Mr. Douglas's story is to be believed, thfe Emperor strongly disavowed a treaty, which he considered made his country merely a province of Japan. The new convention seems to do away with Japanese pretence, and lets in a flood of light on Japaneso diplomacy. ■MOURNING FOR THEIR LORD. BUT STILL WITH AN EYE TO THE MAIN CHANCE. (Received July 27, 8.48 a.m.) SEOUL, 26th July. When the fimperor's abdication was announced, all tho ladies of the palaco thronged the palace, condoling, weeping, and wailing. They then carried off every portable article as souvenirs. The Emperor, at the request of tho Premier of Korea, rerigned in favour of the Crown Prince, the alleged reason being that th© Emperor sent a deputation to Tho Hague Convention.
