THE MAYOR OF KARORI.

TO THE EDITOH. ■ Sir, — Under the above beading a letter appeared in your issue of last "evening from, the Mayor of Karori, in which he questions the accuracy of your paragraph on the question of his leave of absence, and states that the motion for leave of absence was not carried on his castingvote. Your paragraph was strictly accurate. The Mayor stated correctly that four members voted for the motion and four against, that is to say, there was a tie. The Mayor then voted for the leave of absence. Xow, bir, a show of hands for and against having been I taken and a tie eventuating, could any J other than a casting-vote decide the question? Of course, it is only fair to the Mayor to state that he did not use his deliberative vote,! but that does not alter tho fact that the motion was carried on his casting-vote. The reason for the opposition to the granting of leave of absence was the fact that the Mayor allowed his unopposed election to take place without informing the ratepayers of his intention to go Home. — I am, etc., R. H. WEDDE. 17th May, 1907. With reference to the statement of Mr. A. C. Pearca, Mayor of Karori, that the fact of his intention to visit the Old Country had been common property for two months patt, a Karori resident writes questioning the assertion. J.he first public announcement, so far as he can ascertain, was a paragraph that appeared is. the Post some daj>s after the Mayoralty election, and this was the first authentic information the majority of the burgesses received. There was, he has been told, a rumour current at the time of the election that the Mayor contemplated a trip Home, but the electors could hardly be expected to believe that a man would have allowed himself to be nominated for tho Mayoralty without first publicly announcing that he intended to fulfil only half the trust confided to him. The correspondent considers it unbecoming for i tho Mayor to remain at the council table while the question of his absence was being discussed.
