The Acting-Premier recehed tho follawing cablegram this morning from the High Commissioner:— -In conjunction with the Hertford County Asylum • Committee, I prosecuted to-day several bmithfield salesmen for applying Now Zealand labels and bags to River Plate nrutton to fill contract with the Asylum Committee. Defendants were fined £5, and tho costs amounted to £25." Speaking at the session of the University Senate ih Christchurch last week, - Mr. Louis Cohen said ho wished to bring before the Senate the matter of barristers' and solicitors' degrees. The point he wanted to make was that the efforts of the University, to whom had been entrusted the conduct of examinations by the Judges of the Supreme Court, M-erc really nullified by a principle not referable to cither common-cense or reason. The law was that when a solicitor ;in the colony had practised for five years he became ipso facto 'a barrister *of tho Supreme Court. He did not know if the Chancellor was aware of any reason for the absupdity of that anomalous position. Hie University, as the exnmin'ing body, it seemed to him, was stultifying the efforts to raise the standard of qualification foiMtho degiee of barrister^ -He was prepared to give notice, of motion that the benutc should address itself to the Minister of Justice, asking him to have tho law amended which gave the 1 qualification to persons who were really not entitled 10 it. The Chancellor (Sir .Robert btout) &aid he had?no doubt that the matter would be discussed. He did not wish to explain how the statute camt to be passed, but he believed' it was vicious and had a bad effect on the legal profession. Pie could not understand why it was passed. Now barristers were cotting m by what he would call a back door, and lie was very sorry for the profession.
