HIGH COMMISSIONER'S Tho Department of Industries and Commerce has received , iho following . cable message from tho High Commissioner, dated London, 2nd February: — The mutton markot 13 woak. The quantity going into consumption at present is very small, but tho supply meets the demand. Light Canterbury mutton is icarcc, and is quotrd at 43d. Tho aveiage prioo of heavy-woight Canterbury is 4id per Ib. North Island mutton is quoted at *ijd and 4£d per 1b for light and heavy weights respectively. Tho lamb market is quiet, as buyers are not prepared to rnako forward purchases at present prices. Tho market is very unsettled on account of Iho contradictory reports which are current regarding the drought affecting New Zealand shipment*. Tho nominal price of New Zealand lamb is 6d per lb, aud Australian is quoted at 4£d per lb. I'he boef market is dull. Hinciquarter3 aro quoted at 3jjd and fores at 2Jd por lb. J.'ho butter market is steady, and there te a fair demand for better grades. New Zealand butter is giving satisfaction io buyers, ant( choicest brands aro quoted at 104s per cVvt. Australian is at 993 and Danish at 114s per cwt. Tho ohceso market is firm with an upward tendoncy, And tlier© is a. jjootl tlemaud at 64s for New Zealand manufacture. Tho hemp market is quiet but firm. A good business has boen done. Good fair grade, on spot, is quoted at £40; Janu-ary-March shipmcut at £39, and fair curTent Manila at £43 por ton. There is a better demand for cocksfoot seed. Bright dressed seed, 171b to the bushel, is quoted at 48s por cwt. Tho following nro tho shipments received from tho Rivor Plato during January: — Mutton — London 61,998 carcases, Liverpool 81,396, Hull 12,546, Newcastle 20,175, Cardiff 6358, Southampton 2151, Plymouth 1617; total 186,241. Lamb— London 1809, Liverpool 4102, Hull 1716, Newcastle 979, Cardiff 693, Southampton 286, Plymouth 100. Butter— ll,o63cwt to London, Liverpool, and Southampton. •
The Poverty Bay Herald understand!: that the Government valuers have received instructions that in future assessmonts they are to set down tho values of all flax and standing timber. On Friday next, at noon, Messrs. J. H.
