UNIVERSITY SENATE.
[bx telegraph.— press association.] CHRISTCHURCH, M February. Tho Chancellor said ho had received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner: — "In Teply to your telegram of yesterday, tho Secretary of the Privy Council informs me it is proposed to grant tho greater part, of the New Zealand University petition. The Privy Council intends to send on an official communication within three days. In view of this substantial concession, r have tak-cn the responsibility of with- • holding your telegram for the present. In case the University insists on immediate action, please telegraph instructions accordingly." In his (the Chancellor's) opinion, to only grant the request of the senate in respoct to a portion of tho degrees would be worse than no grant at all. Ho thought a reply should bo sent that unless the request was acceded to as a whole, it would bo far better to withdraw it. It was resolved to consider the question at a later hour of the day. Subsequently, tho Chancellor proposed that a telegram bo sent to tho Education Department ut Wellington, _ asking it, to cable- to the High Commissioner as follows : — "Sonalo insists on withdrawal of petition unless all degrees are granted" on the ground that it would 'be no improvement and most unworkable to grant only some of the degrees. The proposal was agreed to.
