THE QUESTION OF AWARDS. *CHRISTCHURCH, Ist February. For Friday there had been an unusually good attendance* at the Exhibition. The orchestra has returned after its very successful Wellington trip, and the programme it gavo in the concert hjll this afternoon was enthusiastically received by an exceptionally large audience. The Maoris took a mournful depasture to-day from the pa, which ,will soon be tenanted, however, by a Hawkes Bay contingent. A meeting of the Awards Committee -was held this afternoon, when the judging of exhibits was discussed and judges appointed, subject to their agreeing to act. In a large. number oF classes most of tho judges were chosen from outside Christchurch, recourse heing had to Auckland, Wellington, Dunodin, and other parts of the colony for suitable men. The Government is also appointing experts for those classes in which exceptional technical knowledge is required. ' The exhibitors will be called together in about a week to appoint comparison judges to thoso selected by tho 'Awards Committee, and in case of difference of opinion between the two judges occurring in any class tho committeo will appoint a referee. The scheme of division of exhibits for purposes of judging should now be as perfect as possible. A battalion of Wellington School Cadets, to the number of 500, are expected to commence a week's encampment on the Exhibition grounds on Thursday next under Colonel Lovcday. Cadets from all parts of- the colony will follow them at snort intervals. . 3Jusic w jn bo a S pp C i a i feature at the Exhibition during the next week or so. Next week' there will be ' an orchestral concert every afternoon, preceded on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday by an organ recital. Special arrangements are being made for meeting, tho wishes of concertgoers. Ballot papers will be distributed on which people may write the names of any p.ieccs they desire the orchestra to play, and these papers will be opened and counted e-vcry week, and the. programmo for the Saturday afternoon concerts will be compiled in accordance with tho votes cast.
