RECORDS FOR JANUARY. January was a fairly sunny month, as people even with short memories must know. Tho sun was above the horizon for a total of 458 hours, and 247 hours of bright sunshino were recorded. During the middle of the day, between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., the sunshine averaged 45 minutes per hour, and the average instalment was 8 hours a day. The rainfall was "normal. The fall aggregated 3.44 inches, just two points under the average for previous years. The showers were distributed over eight days, with the maximum, 1.22 inches, on the 17th. A strong, gusty nor'-wester, with a depressing atmosphere, is the most striking feature of to-day's weather. There have been showers, and more may be expected. For the twenty-four hours preceding 9 a.m. to-day tho wiqd's average velocity was 32 miles an bpur, and the rate at 9 o'clock was about 45. •

Approximately the expenses connected with the bringing of the Exhibition Orchestra to Wellington amount to £670. This sum, of course, includes the Tent of the Town Hall for- six concerts. The receipts, as near as can be stated at present, /or each concert weio : — Friday, £126 ; Saturday, £89 ; Monday (matinee), £42 ; Tuesday, £142 ; Wedr.«sday, £103 ; and last night's concert £142; total, £644. These figures are not accurate to a pound, but they sto approximately correct Tho guarantors will not be required to make good any deficiency, aa it is practically certain the charges for the Town Hall will be so reduced as to make -receipts and expenses balance. At the police Court this afternoon two men named H. A. Ruch, ticket collector, and a fireman named Joseph M'Cracken were convicted and ordered to come up for sentence on a charge of stealing fifteen, theatrical ticketa valued at 30s. The accused were also ordered to refund the 30s. The Garrison Band has received tho following additional contributions to its contest fund: — Messrs. , M J. Brookes and E. D. 8011, £2 2s each; W. G. Duthie, W. E. Bethunc, H. K. Bethune, J. Keir, A. M. Lewis, E. C. E. Mills, and R. C. Kirk, £1 Is each ; W. F. Ross 10s 6d ; James Dykes 10s-; and several smaller amounts. Several prisonors will be set forward 1 for sentence in tho Supreme Court, before Mr. Justice Cooper, at 10 o'clock to-morrow morning. The Rev. G. F. Wilson \'m7a., at London, general superintendent of the Missions to Seamen, is making a tour of the< Australasian colonies, and will probably arrive in Wellington this evening. The matter was ventilated in a case in which Donarkl Htt-< ward Robertson was fined by Dr. A. M'Arthur, S.M., 20s, with £3 10s costs, in respect of this class of offence. .Horace Ames was similarly dealt with for having kept an unregistered dairy. Tho department was represented by Mr. i Stout. John Wilson was fined £1-, with £2 9s costs, for having ill-treated a horse by working it whilst suffering from open wounds. Tho prosecution • was made by tho Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, for which Mr. Burgess appeared. John Thos. Shepherd, represented by Mr. Herdman,^ I applied to have varied two maintenance orders .against him in respect of children.
