THE HUTTON MEMORIAL.

An abstract of the report of the committee of the New Zealand Institute on the Hutton Memorial Fund appeared in our issue last night. After the death of Captain Hutton, the institute resolved to commemorate his distinguished scientific work in#New Zealand by establishing a fund for the recognition of scientific research by New Zealanders in New Zealand — a "Hutton Medal," to be awarded triennially "to persons who have made some notable contribution in connection with the zoology, botany, or geology of New Zealand, in addition to grants from the accrued interest on the invested fund to assist such persons in their researches." It appears that about £330 has been collected by private subscription for this purpose, and £300 has been placed on the supplementary estimates towards the same object. The amount contributed has not come up to tho committee's expectations ; but the noteworthy point is that it has nearly all come from the South Island. The Hawkes Bay Philosophical Institute is the only branch in this island that has made a grant from its funds, and "the amount of private subscriptions received from the North Island has been vory small indeed." It is important that the movement should be colonial, and not local. The name of Captain Hutton is one that should be commomorated, and the method proposed is a worthy one, to which no exception can be taken. We, trust that the North Island will rise to the occasion, and that, in Wellington, at all events, the timely reminder of the committee— which is keeping the fund itill open— will meet with a due response,
