A long discussion took place on the fourth recommendation, which proposed to repeal the condition that any person sitting for examination in the B.A. degree should also take mental science. On a division the clause was adopted by 15 votes to 5. In moving tho adoption of clause 8 Professor J. R. Brown said the application was tho first, request on the part of a first-class Honours graduate of another university to be allowed to take advantage of what the senate had recent,ly granted. Ho thought it wtm a hapi-y

omen ,for this concession that the first applicant should be a gentleman of such academical standing and literary qualifications as Mr. Joynt. Mt. Baume pointed out that the statute would havo to be amended to carry out the. recommendation. In any case he thought that they should hesitate before altering the statute, or, if granting the application, should limit its operation to work done while the applicant had been a member of the New Zealand University. Eventually the matter was referred back to the Ad' Eundem Committee to draw up a modification of th© statute to give effect to the recommendation.
