There was a case of ptomaine poisoning in Wellington last week, tho victim being a visitor from Blenheim. Medical aid had to be given to effect recovery. The cause of tho poisoning is attributed to a dish of tinned whitebait, but a friend who partook of the same dish was in no way affected. . It is reported that a North Island Fheepdealer recently purchased in South Canterbury several thousand of twotooth ewes, to be shipped north and there fattened. The price he had to pay, however, would not leave a largo margin, and docs not necessarily indicate more extenfeive "deals" of the same nature. The c.rner, in getting rid of his flock for lack of pasture, state^ that the forced sale meant a straight-out loss to him of £750. • The appointment of a chief detective in the office of the Commissioner of Police has been decided upon. His duty will be to investigate special cases, and in that way he will be able to render ■y&luable assistance to the Commissioner. The position is to be filled by Detective M'llvorney of Inyercargill, whose knowledge of the law will be of great use to him in the discharge of his new duties. .At the meeting of trie Land Board this morning the following transfers were approved : — Section 19, block 5, Karioi,- from F.
