Venn and Miss Balchin, af Shannon, will leave for London ,by the Sha-vr-Savill steamer Athenic. A Press Association cable message from Sydney records the death of Dr. Laishley, formerly of Auckland. Tho Secretary for Education (Sir E. O. 'Gibbes) will return from Auckland at the end of next week. The Hon. R. MNab, who left for Hastings this morning, will be back in Wellington next Saturday night. Mr. H. W. Kersley has cancelled his proposed trip to England on account of the death of his brothel. Mr., Mrs., and Mi&s Rigarlsford, of Wellington, intend, leaving for London in March, by the Shaw-Savill steamer lonic Jlr. W. H. Tisdall intends leaving on a visit to Londbn by the steamer Athenic, which is to sail from Wellington in April. Mr. Ja3. Mills, of the Union Company, and Mr. A. R. Hislop, secretary of the Marino Engineers' Institute, will be 'passengers for Sydney on Saturday by the Riverina. Mr. and Mrs. T. Ballinger and Miss L. Ballingei intend taking a trip to the Old Country. Ihey will leave tor Sydney on Saturday week, and proceed thence'by the Orontes to London. ■ Me P. C. Mahoney, of the Wellington Harbour Board staff, was presented by^bis fellow-employees last evening with suitable gifts on the occasion of his marriage. Colonel Da vies, Inspector-General under the new Defence 6eheme, is at present in Auckland, in connection with handing over the control of the Auckland volunteer district to Lieut. -Colonel Wolfe. llr. A. C. Norris, of the Telegraph pepartment, has been promoted to the position of officer in charge of Whakatane, Bay of Plenty. Mr. Norris was formerly stationed at Wellington, but has until recently been on the Napier staff. The Rev. Gratton Guinness, D.D., author of "The Approaching End of the Age," etc., Founder and late Director of the Harley House Missionary Training College, London, is expected in Wellington to-morrow. He is to preach in chs Vivian-street Baptist Church Doth Morning and evening on Sunday next. And is to give a lecturo on the "Gospel for To-day" in the Kent-terraco Presbyterian Church on Monday and • in the Vivian-street Baptist Church on Tuesday. Dr. Guinness has been widely known for many years in all Christian communities, both as director of missionary training college* and the Regions Beyond Mission, and as an author of famous works on prophecy. Missionaries of various societies m all quarters of the globe have been trained under his direction. Mr. Jas. Wishart, one of the earliest settlers, passed away yesterday at the residence of Mr. J. A. Wishart, of ihe A.M.P. Society, at Roseneath. Mr. Wishart arrived at Wellington in the Indian Queen in 1857, and after a sh irfc stay in the Wairarapa took up land in Hawkes Bay, where he farmed for shout, sight years. The Maori war, however, interfered greatly with his operations, and eventually, at the lime of the Mohaka massacre, practically tho whole of his property was destroyed. After fiat he went into business at Napier, and afterwards again* took up land at Mangatoro, where he resided until a few ja^s ago. He was a very powerful mat in his day, and some two or three tjrnjs achieved distinction by walking from Mohaka to Napier in one day — a huge feat, considering the nature of the roads.
