A USEFUL HAT.

This summer in Melbourne (according to the Argus), sees the success of the white covered green-lined helmet, which is at present being worn in and out of season by women of all ages, for the schoolgirl wears one, and so does her grandmother. Though tho majority of such helmets are white-covered, still occasionally one sees one of scarlet linen or of the brightest shado of green. When the wearer is a small girl it is kept in place by a piece of elastic, but hatpins are sufficient for grown-ups, who, as a rule, swathe their hats with long chiffon veils, which are inclined to float in tho breeze. A hut suitable for every-day wear, especially in the summor, is always more or less a difficulty, especially when there is no universal fashion. Once tho "simple sailor" was correct, and its voguo lasted for a long time, but it was rarely quite becoming and often most uncomfortable. Still, a revival seemed possible a few months ago, but, fortunately, it has stopped at the scholgirl. Tho plain, starched washing hat was charming, but its inability to stand tho changes of weather was a disadvantage. Tho durable panama was both pretty and inexpensive, and ought to have stayed longer with us. It is probably because there hns been no decided stylo of seaside hat for some years that tho helmet has beon rushed this scuson. Last summer it was fairly in demand, but for every one worn thon there are six to be seen now.

"What a fearful storm we had last night — worso tins year, I should say!" "Keally? I was at tho women's suffrage meeting in the town hall, and wo didn't hgar a sound of it !"
