The Education Department has received the results of the last examinations of the City and Guilds of London Institute that weie conducted thioughout the colony some months ago. The successful candidates in Wellington were as follows :— Gna manufacture — Clarence H. Barratt, honours, second class. Plumbers' work — Alexander Parton, honours, second class; Paul Coffey, ordinary and practical pass; Edward T. G. Coleman. ordinary pass; George W. Key, ditto; Charles E. Lwsen, ditto ; Harold* G. Potts, ditto ; Bertie Wood, ditto. Principles of plumbing — John IT. Thompson, ordinary pass; Charles B. Williamson, ditto. Wiremen's work — Auguste K. W. Rissel, second class. Electric light and power — Philip J. Fix, preliminary, pass; Valentino J. Crowley, ordinary, second rlass. Plain cookery — Nora Alexander, second claw. At Manterton the successful candidates ■were : — Plumbers' work — Thomas • M. Watterson, ordinary, pass ; Thomas J. Goodfellow, ditto; Robert Reardon, preliminary, pass.

Some difficulty is being experienced in getting the required class of workers for tho railway improvement operation!! between Wellington and Peton-e. Ten men were recently sent from there to the ballast pit in the bed of the Hutt River near Hayward's. The Messrs Fletcher, who lio/ve secured the contract for the conveyance of metal from Pencarrow acroas tie harbour, will use several scows in th© work. The tender of Mem*. Coffey and Gregan has been accepted by the Hutt River Board for the Gear Island protective works. The work includes the diversion of the whole of the Hutt River waters at the northern end of the island into the eastern channel, so that when it is completed the area will b« no longer an iiland.
