Mr. Garrard, who arrived by the Waikare fiom Sydney this morning, is an old New Zealander, for he camo here in the Ayrdale in 1860, and was on the coast during the Taranaki native troubles, taking passengers to Nelson. He was in Nelson" for' five years, and eorved his time there as an engineer. It was in 1867 that he went to New South Walc-s, and had been thcro ever since, except for occasional trips, including a number to this country, of which he is very fond, and where he has many frknds and relatives. Two complaints in reference to the tramWays are made by a correspondent — first, the increasing habit of men smoking in front of the trolly-pole, unchecked by the conductors, and in spite of tha painted notice ; secondly, the want of ventilation in the cars, especially when, as is often tho case, they aie crowded. The first, our correspondent thinks, could be remedied by conductors enforcing the regulation ; the second, by their opening windows and ventilators. The inquest concerning the death of Mr. Biyrt Chitty Dean, postmaster at Palmerston South, was continued before Mr. James Ashcroft, district coroner, after we went to press jestefday afternoon. Additional evidence showed that deceased was on sick leave. He was under treatment by Dr. Henry, who recommended his entering a private hospital in Willis-tti-cet for the Weir-Mitchell treatment. His nerves were unstable. Dr. Henry thought he was on the borderline of lunacy, but said no" doctor could conscientiously recommend his commital to an asylum. He was about 52 years of age, and left a widow, three daughters, a son. The youngest member of the 'family would be about nine years of age. A verdict of suicide by cutting his throat whilst in a state of temporary insanity was returned. The coming sculling match between Stanbury and Webb is evoking intense interest at Wanganui. The Chronicle reports that quite a number of interested spectators have been gathering on the river bank during the past few days with the obje.ct of seeing the renowned Stanbury. indulge in a spin. Stanbury usually fjoes out about 11 in the morning, and again at about 4 in the afternoon, and ns Webb generally goes out about the samo time, judges of sculling are given an opportunity of comparing the styles of the two men. Yesterday morning the water was very rough, and the sculleTS betook themselves to the upper reaches of the- river. Before leaving Stanbury and Webb submitted themselves to tho attentions of the camera, man. In a dwellinghouso threatened by file in Goro a few days ago the most ludicrous things were done. One man was seen striving wildly to wrench a door off its hinges, another tore down a mantelpiece, and a third effected the rescue of a. fire grate. Firniture, clothing, bedding, and crockery were unceremoniously dumped outside in a confused medley, and in about, ten minutes as much damage was done by these gentlemen as a fire could do in twenty. The owner practically finds his place unfit to live in, not owing to the" damage caused by fire, but by that cau&edi by the misdirected zeal of his friends. As an instance of how the goods were thrown about, tho police pickivd up a, £1 note and' a glass containing a number of small silver coins, where thpy were thrown by some rescuer whoso honesty far exceeded his judgment.
