It is stated that the German CoiisulGeneral has been instructed by cable to represent to the Commonwealth Government in a. most friendly way that the announcement of the proposed new surtax on foreign goods has been received in commercial circles in Germany with anxiety and indignation, and that the German Government, while deprecating any attempt to influence the policy of tho Commonwealth, fears it may bo compelled to take measures that would have tho effect of interfering with the mutual commercial relations between Germany and Australia.
