JUDGES AND INCOME TAX. [PBKSS ASSOCIATION.] (Received Sepfcembor 17, 10.30 a.m.) BRISBANE, This Day. The Government has received advice that the judges' petition asking the King to disallow an Act passed last session to compel the payment of income-tax on judges' (salaries, has failed. The judges will, therefore, have to pay the tax. ATTEMPTS TO WRECK A TRAIN. MELBOURNE, This Day. Attempts were made to wreck a train at Bendigo, and a train at Kangaroo Flat. Some dynamite caps were placed on the rails, while some sticks of gelignite were jammed in thd space between the rails. In some way the caps became detached from the gelignite, and no harm was fortunately done. THE MELBOURNE ROBBERY. MELBOURNE This Day. ' The burglary at the King's warehouse turns out to be not so serious as at first expected. The thieves took electro-plate instead of silver plate. -CAMP SCHOOLS. SYDNEY, This Day. An experiment with camp schools is about to be tried by the Education Department. The object is to bring the boys into contact with country life. The first school will consist of twelve units of twelve boys each, a master being in charge of each unit. They will visit a well-man-aged farm and camp there for a week. The first school starts on 10th October. SEAMEN'S WAGES. MELBOURNE, This Day, The Steamship Owners' Federation and Seamen's Union have eigned an agreement increasing the wages of the men by ten shillings per month, and making several new regulation* in reference to j overtime and hours. NORFOLK ISLAND. MELBOURNE7ISth September. Mr. Deakin stated in the House of Representatives that Norfolk Island would not be taken over by the Commonwealth this session. CROSS-COUNTRY RACE. MELBOURNE, 15th September. The ten miles cross-country championship was won by J. Riddell in 58min 57sec.
