PROVISION REGARDING TEACHERS. CLAUSE 7 PASSED. [press association. l LONDON, 4th July. Clause 7 of the Education Bill was passed ,in th© Houeo of Commons yesterday by 364 votes to 183. The clause relates to the provisions as to teachers. As originally introduced, tho clause read as follows : — 1. A teacher employed in a public elementary school shall not give any religious instruction of ,a special character not permitted Under section 14 of the Elementary Education Act, 1870, in any school in which facilities for that instruction are afforded under this Act, except where permitted to do so by the local .education authority }n cases where extended facilities iife so afforded. 2. A teacher employed in a public elementary school shall not bs required as part .of his duties as teacher to give any religious instruction, and shall not be required aB a condition of his appointment to subscribe to any religious creed, or to attend or abstain from attending any Sunday school or place of religious worship. 3. Where a local education authority continue an existing voluntary school under this Act as a school provided by them, any teachers in the school , at the time of the transfer shall continue to hold office under the local education authority by the same j tenure and on tho same terms and conditions so far as they are 'consistent with the provisions of this Act as before the transfer. 4- Any teacher employed at the time_ of the passing of this. Act in an existing voluntary school who. loses his employment by reason of the school ceasing to be a public elmentary school in consequence of this Act, shall l?e entitled, in accordance, with regulations made for the purpose by the Treasury and tho Board of 'Education, notwithstanding anything in the Elementary School Teachers' Superannuation Act, 1898, or the rules made under that Act, to pay contributions to the deferred annuity fund under that Act during any time (not exceeding one year after the date at which he so loses his - employ* menfc] in which he is not employed in recorded service, and to reckon the time in respect of which contributions are so_ made as if it were recorded service. PROPOSED DELETION. LONDON, 4th July. Mr. Birr-ell, Minister of Education, intends' to move the omission from tho Education Bill of clauses 14 to 24 of Part 2 of tie measure (relating to educational endowments). •
