A meeting of the Eastbourne Borough Council was held in the Bank Chambers yesterday afternoon. Present— The Mayor (Mr. F. G. Bolton), and Councillors Shortt, Howden, M'Keegan, Foley, and Dr Mackenzie. It was announced that seven applications had been received for the position of Town Clerk. His Worship stated thnt the Sand-drift Committee had a report ready for me next meeting of the council. On the motion of the Mayor, the council adjourned for a week as a token of respect to the memory of the late Premier. The captains of Rugby football teams have elected Messrs. G. Spencer and F. C. Atkinson as tneir representatives on the board which is to control the appointment of. referees. At a full meeting of the committee it was decided that the most convenient night for holding meetings to make appointments was Monday in each week. As the union's bylaw permits clubs to appoint their own referees by agreement up to four days before a match, it was resolved to ask clubs to forego this privilege to the extent of sending in their agreements for each Saturday in time for tho previous Monday's meeting. The players' representatives thought the proposal would be consented to. It was decided to request the Rugby Union to notify clubs of fixtures a fortnight in advance.
